There has been a clear reference to the pug in Chinese history where it first appeared. It’s first appearance was as a lap dog. They were known in Chinese as the ‘Lo-Chiang’ at that time. We are talking about a period ranging from anywhere between 1600 BC and 700 BC. The pug was a highly sought after and prized dog then for Chinese Nobility.
In fact Chinese Royalty was known to have pugs and they were also given away to the favoured Royal Courtiers as special and valuable gifts. This royal history of the pug can still be seen in the way the pugs hold themselves. You will rarely see a frivolously hyperactive pug, they will mostly appear stately and serene. In fact it is believed that the pug had such an influence on the history of China, that even today’s symbolism has reflections of the pug. When trade started in China, then it was Dutch soldiers who were the first to bring back the pug dogs. This was in the 16th and 17th centuries, and very soon the pug rose in importance in society. An interesting incident in the pages of European history is about how the pug rose to become the official dog of the Prince of Orange. The interesting bit was that the pug saved the Princes life by barking at an assassin. There is mention of a famous pug in France owned by none other than Marie Antoinette, and it was named Mops. In fact Napoloen’s wife Josephine, also owned a pug and it was called Fortune. The pug makes a grand entry in America
It was the nineteenth century when the Pug arrived in America. It took no time for the pug to became a favourite breed, and in 1981 a pug won the the Kennel Club show in the United States. This was the first and only instance of a pug winning the Kennel Club show in US. Of course after that the pug also went on to win the Crufts and the World Dog Show.

Amazingly the pug was a lot leaner hundreds of years back than it is today. In a painting of 1745, a self portrait by William Hogarth, we see the pug but it is leaner and with a snout that is not as ‘puggish’ as today. Thus this breed of dog, the pug has actually been shaped across the centuries to look the way it looks like today.
However, today, the pug is an unmistakable dog breed. Anyone and everyone who has seen the Hutch commercials knows what a pug is. There was literally a pug wave after those TV ads, and it lasts to this day. There are many people who want to own a pug today. There are three main colours amongst pugs, silver coloured pugs, fawn coloured pugs and the black pugs. Though you will have mostly seen the silver/fawn coloured pug, there are quite a few black pugs too. As these dogs age, whether silver, fawn or black, they develop some grey around the face, and they also have some white hair on the chest.
What are the main characteristics of the classic Pug dog?
If you want to know the characteristics and attributes of the classic pug breed, have a look at these points:
1. The classic pug weighs around 7 and quarter kilos.
2. It is squarish in build and squat in overall structure.
3. The face is flat and dark and the chin is nearly missing.
4. It has round black eyes, that are quite expressive.
5. From the front, the head appears round.
6. The face has deep set wrinkles which are quite dark and also around the snout.
7. It has a tightly curled up tail, which sometimes has a double curl.
These features and characteristics make it an unmistakable breed of dog.
Black Pugs are the dominant colour
The silver/fawn pug is an ancient breed, but somewhere down the line it must have been bred with a small black dog, to bring about the black pug. Though the black pugs are quite common, in India there are mostly fawn coloured pugs, and the black ones are hardly seen. However it is the black one which is the dominant colour. If black pug is bred with a fawn coloured one, the pops will be black.
Queen Victoria the famous breeder of pugs owned a black pug. Across Indian metros, and mini metros, it is the fawn one that has swept everyone off their feet.

A pug will normally deliver a litter of 6 – 9 pups. If you are buying a pup puppy be sure to go to a reputable breeder, that way you are sure that you are buying a pet which has been well cared for is from good stock.
Caring for your new pup puppy
Once you get your pug pup make sure you have a vet. You should take your pug puppy to the vet soon after receiving it and ask the vet to give the pup a full check-up, any needed vaccinations and a check for worms that might have been passed on by the mother’s milk.
Pug puppies should be vaccinated at the ages of 8, 12 and 16 weeks old and your breeder and vet will advise you of which vaccinations have been given and a schedule of the ones to come.
Keep your new pug pup away from other dogs until all of the vaccinations have been given.

Try not to restrict the amount of food you give to your pup puppy. But try not to vary the sort of food. Pugs have fairly weak stomachs and are best suited to a standard diet without too much in the way of sweets and human food.

The head of a pug is large and round. They have black eyes that are large and round, and their ears are small and very soft, with a velvety feel to them. The face and snout area has deep and big wrinkles that are dark, and they have a flat face with a flat and blunt muzzle.

A pug’s neck is strong, thick, and holds the head proudly. The back is level and the body is short.
Coat
The coat is fine, smooth, soft, short and glossy.
Color
The colors are fawn or black.
Markings
The pug’s marking are very clear and well defined. The parts of the pug that are black are the muzzle of the pug, its ears and any moles on the cheeks. Also the diamond shape or the thumb mark on the forehead of the pug is also black. And the more intense and clearly defined the markings are, the better it is.

Heat
And important part of pug care is heat. Pugs do not like too much heat. It is difficult for them to disperse heat and can become very ill through too much heat.
Snout trouble
Pugs can have breathing difficulties because of the shape of the shout. Keeping cool can also be linked to breathing difficulties.
Inflammation at the hair follicles
Pugs sometimes develop while pimples on their face which are part of an infection in the hair follicles around the face.
Luxating Patella
The patella in the knee can become dislocated and this is something which you should look out for.

The Main Issues
Heat
Pugs cannot tolerate a climate which is too hot. The flat face makes it difficult for the pug to disperse heat from their body and they can become very ill if they are subject to high temperatures.
If you live in a hot climate, or if the summer is very hot you should make sure that your pug is kept cool and if you go out take plenty of water and even a sun shade.
Also, if it is hot inside the home, your pug will struggle, provide a cool room or keep your pug in an AC room.
Breathing problems
Because of the short snout, pugs can have problems breathing, so you should try to protect against colds and any sort of congestion. The pug’s nose should be moist and if it does become dry consult your vet or try a little Vaseline.
Heavy breathing can also be linked to the heat issue as talked about earlier. The nose and nostrils of the pug are also very soft and can tend to collapse through heavy breathing. If this becomes a problem for your pug, seek the advice of your vet.
Inflammation at the hair follicle
This also occurs mainly around the snout and will show up as small while spots. Although this may not trouble your pug too much it is a good idea to get it checked out if you notice it. It will normally clear up with antibiotics.
Knee Problems
This is a common problem in pugs, and is due to the dislocation of the small movable bone in the knee called the patella from the femur. This will be quite obvious and very painful. If you spot it then you should immediately take your pug to the vet and give it proper treatment according to the advise of the vet.
Hip Dysplasia of pugs
The hip joint is a typical ball and socket joint, and sometimes in pugs the head of the femur bone may not properly align with the hip socket. If this problem is mild then with proper exercise and diet the pug can lead a normal healthy life, however if it is a severe case then surgery may be required.
Ear Infection
Ear Infections are often seen in pugs. And can become quite painful if untreated. Severe cases may need to have the ears repeatedly syringed out. But if you catch it early any long term damage can be averted with simple ear drops for your vet.
The above are some of the main health issuers that pugs face, if you start alert and catch any health problems quick your pug should enjoy a happy and pain free life.
Pug Training – how to train your pug
Basic training
Most pug owners seem to agree that the pug is a somewhat stubborn dog.
Having said that, we should realise that training your pug should start very early and is best carried out by the treat or scold method.
Pugs are very loyal dogs and if trained with love and patience will do almost anything for their masters, and will definitely do anything for a treat.
It is important that you take it slow. Try to train in one command at a time until that command is mastered and then move on to another. Of course others things will be going on while one command is being trained in, but you will have to live and let live until one thing is understood.
Pugs will pick up on your emotions and voice tone and if these are in conjunction with a treat or a scold the pug will eventually learn. Consistency is the key word and patience is another.
House Training
House training your pug should start right from the outset. There are three main methods of house training and which one you go for will depend mainly upon your lifestyle and when you are around the house.
Crate Training – teach your Pug to hold themselves when in their crate – best if you are at home for a considerable amount of time.
Paper Training – teach your Pug to go on a designated spot of house training paper – best if you are not home most of the day and do not have help
Schedule Based Training (SBT) – teach your Pug to go out at consistent, regular times – best if you are home most of the day or have help who is home, and you can be absolutely regular with the schedule
The best bet is to do a little research first and then pick the method which suits you best and then stick to it.
Again consistency is going to be the key.
