A little about Auto Clean Kitchen Chimneys
If you are on this page you already know the advantages of a kitchen chimney or hood. These wonderful appliances suck away the smoke and smells of a typical Indian kitchen and leave the air clean and fresh. Another common problem in Indian kitchens is blackening of the walls and also items inside the kitchen because of the oil in the soot, which is a by-product of cooking Indian style with oils and masalas and pungent ingredients.
A well fitted good quality kitchen chimney will completely eliminate all of these problems. However, one of the painful chores involved with a kitchen chimney is the regular cleaning it requires, as the oils and soot and other material gets accumulated in the filters, and the filters have to be scrubbed and cleaned.
With a regular non auto clean chimney you have to actually open up the chimney, remove bulky parts, and then scrub the baffle or mesh filters one at a time. This cleaning and scrubbing is quite an intensive activity and requires a good amount of time.
An auto clean chimney completely eliminates the need to clean the filters, remove bulky parts from the chimney of worry about accumulated oil clogging the chimney. Read on to figure out what will be a good auto clean chimney to choose for your specific needs.

Why should you buy an auto clean chimney?
The kitchen chimneys are very useful. They keep the kitchen free of smoke and oil and odours, however cleaning them is a big chore. It is actually a time-consuming and tedious process. The auto clean chimney cleans itself with the press of a button and saves you all the hassle and time of cleaning your kitchen chimney. This is the biggest advantage of an auto clean chimney.
Great features – Just press a switch and auto clean
Since the auto clean chimney separates out the oil particle with its specialized technology the filter of the auto clean chimney does not get blocked as it happens in normal chimneys. This means that the auto clean chimney will work with better suction and therefore more effectively than normal chimneys as its filters will not be blocked.
The auto clean chimney collects all the oil in the fumes and in the kitchen air in a separate container, which can be easily removed and cleaned and put back in. This is a great advantage and saves a lot of effort and time.
The life span of auto clean chimneys is also more as the non-stick aluminium turbine blower inside it cleans off all oil and dust particles thereby increasing the life of its internal parts.
The chimney filter does not need to be cleaned often as it remains relatively dirt free because of the way the auto cleaning chimney operates.
Pro Tip #1
The hood of the chimney you buy, should be at least as wide as the cooking area above which it will be installed.
What are the features that you need to look for when buying a kitchen chimney
If you are planning to buy a kitchen chimney, there are certain things you need to keep in mind. The most important things to look for in a kitchen chimney include the filter and the type of chimney you should go in for.
Type of filter
When it comes to the filters in kitchen chimneys, there are three main types. These three types of filters have been segregated on the basis of the material used for making them, the structure of the filters and what the filtering process is.
The first type of filter we will look at is the Cassette Filter. Cassette cassette filters are made up of stacks of aluminium mesh which have air gaps in between them. As the kitchen chimney works and pulls in the fumes, grease and smoke, the oil and grease arising out of cooking gets stuck in the mesh and clogs it. It is because of this reason, that a cassette filter needs to be cleaned at least once a week for it to perform well.
The next kind of filter is the Baffle Filter. Baffle filters are made of aluminium or stainless steel, and these baffle sheets are placed in such a way that the maximum grease and oil gets stuck to them when the air is sucked in by the kitchen chimney. The grease and oil slides down the baffle filter and gets accumulated in a collecting trough. The slanting make of the baffle filter means no matter how much clogging happens, it will not affect the suction power of the chimney. This makes it a good choice for Indian cooking where there are more fumes and oil is used along with masalas.
The third type of filter is the Carbon or Charcoal Filter. These filters are made up of black carbon, and since carbon is a very strong absorbing material it also absorbs cooking orders. Though it is a good filter, the grease and oils from cooking have a tendency to clog the carbon filter. This makes it essential to replace carbon filters every 6 months.
Types of Kitchen chimneys
Another important point to consider is the kind of kitchen chimney that you are going to buy. You have to decide on the kind of kitchen chimney depending on where you want to place the kitchen chimney, what your basic requirement is and what kind of space and facilities you have inside your kitchen.
Kitchen chimneys are mainly of four types - the Wall Mounted Kitchen Chimney, the Island Chimney, the Built-in Chimney in the Corner Kitchen Chimney.
To choose the right kind of chimney you have to consider the space that is available to you, where your stove is and whether you have the space for ducts etc. A very important consideration is the size of the kitchen chimney, as it should be the same size as your gas stove or a little bigger. Therefore, it is important to make sure that your kitchen chimney is not smaller than the gas stove or hob you have int he kitchen. Another consideration is whether the kitchen chimney is auto clean or not. The auto clean feature of a kitchen chimney makes it much more convenient as you do not need to clean the filters regularly and it also increases the lifespan of the chimney.
Can you install ducts
The third point to consider, is whether you want ducts or not. The ducts are the large pipes that take away the smoke, fumes and heat out of the house. The problem with ducts is that it spoils the looks of the kitchen due to their big size and un-aesthetic looks.
However, if you do not use ducts, then the kitchen chimney will clean out and thrown back the same air that had entered it. Thus the heat will not get dissipated and nor will you get fresh air from outside.
Go for a well known brand
Another important point to consider is whether or not the brand you choose is a popular Kitchen Chimney brand. It is always best to go with a well known brand that is already established. Some of the top brands are Hindware, Elica, Sunflame, IFB, Kutchina, Faber, Pigeon etc.
Since Indian cooking throw up a lot of smoke and fumes due to the use of oils and masalas, it has almost become essential to have a kitchen chimney. A kitchen chimney in an Indian kitchen will ensure that the cooking fumes, odors and smoke is kept away from the rest of the house, and the air inside the house feels fresh and healthy
Which Kitchen Chimney is the best for the Indian kitchen?
If you install a high quality kitchen chimney hood, you will end up eliminating all the odors, fumes and smells that are produced by Indian cooking, and it will also prevent these unpleasant odors and fumes from spreading into other rooms. There are now many renowned brands that are manufacturing electric kitchen chimneys for the Indian kitchen, which have wide variety of features and models to offer. The kitchen chimneys also look quite good, and some of the top models make your kitchen look better and more stylish too. An important factor to look at while buying a kitchen chimney is the suction power of the kitchen hood, and that is one of the first things to look at while buying one.
When you choose a kitchen chimney, you need to know what kind of filter it has
There are several types of filters that kitchen chimneys are fitted with. The main purpose of the filter is to capture the grime, dust, oil and fumes coming into the chimney and deposit it into a container to be disposed off safely. Thus the filter of the kitchen chimney is what removes the unwanted things in the kitchen fumes and air, and keeps the kitchen air clean and healthy.
It plays a very important role, so you need to be sure that you are getting a kitchen chimney with a filter that fulfills your needs.
Here are the main ones.
Kitchen chimneys with Mesh filters
The mesh filters are also called cassette filters. They are essentially stainless steel or aluminium meshes. The mesh traps the oily and greasy particles and the soot, and cleans the air in the kitchen. These mesh filters are effective but get clogged and need to be cleaned regularly. They are high maintenance filters, and are composed of several layers of mesh. If the filters get clogged then the suction power of the chimney reduces so regular cleaning is important.
Kitchen chimneys with Baffle filters
Baffle filters are the most common type of filters in Indian kitchen chimneys. They are better than mesh filters and are said to be 30% more effective. The baffle filters have curved surfaces that capture the oil, grease and soot. These filters need to be cleaned only once in 3 or 4 months. They are comparatively low maintenance, and are also sometimes detachable. The detachable baffle filters can be very easily cleaned at home. If it is an auto clean chimney then you do not need to clean the baffle filters, but only dispose off the contents of the oil cup or container.
Kitchen chimneys with Carbon filters
Carbon filters do the job of removing odours and finer particles in the air. They are little like the carbon filters in water purifiers. These carbon filters are made from charcoal and capture and remove bad odours. Since they are made of charcoal, some oil and grease can get stuck on them, so they need to be replaced every six months or so.

When buying a kitchen chimney in India you also need to consider the suction power
The suction power of the kitchen chimney is directly related to the size of your kitchen. If you have regular sized kitchen then any kitchen chimney with the minimum suction power will work, but if you have a bigger kitchen, then you need to get a kitchen chimney with higher suction power.
The suction power of kitchen chimneys is measured in cubic meters per hour. Usually the kitchen chimneys have suction power raging from around 450 cubic meters per hour to around 1250 cubic meters per hour. The general rule to calculate what suction power you need for your kitchen, is that you should calculate the total volume of your kitchen and multiply it by 10 to get the suction power required in the kitchen chimney.
To measure the volume of your kitchen just multiply it length with its width with it height. For example a kitchen that is 5 meters long and 4 meters wide and 3 meters in height will have air volume of 5 X 4 X 3 cubic feet. Thus its volume will be 60 cubic meters.
With an air volume of 60 cubic meters the suction power of the chimney should be at least 600 cubic meter per hour.
In this way you can easily calculate the suction power requirement of your kitchen chimney.
Another important factor is the size of the kitchen chimney
There is a very simple rule to figuring out what size of kitchen chimney you need. It should be equal to or bigger than the area of you gas burner.
There are two sizes of kitchen chimneys, 60 cms and 90 cms. Most two burner gas stoves are covered by the 60 cms size. If your stove has more than two burners or is of a larger than normal size then go in for a 90 cms size kitchen chimney.
How to maintain your kitchen chimney
The kitchen chimney is a great convenience in an Indian kitchen. It eliminates the grease and soot that usually gets deposited on the walls and on other articles in the kitchen, and it clears it off smoke and odors.
These chimneys however require some amount of maintenance. The Auto Clean Kitchen Chimneys require the least maintenance. There are kitchen chimneys that have detachable filters and this makes it very easy to clean the filters. However when it comes to a carbon filter, it needs to be replaced pretty regularly for it to be efficient. Here is a look at how you can keep your chimney working effectively and efficiently just by regular cleaning of different parts especially the filters.
Important Note:
Since there is a lot of grease and oil that the chimney pulls in, it is very important to clean it overall on a regular basis. The reason being deposited grease and oil has a danger of catching fire when you are cooking on the gas stove. While you light the burner, the flames might catch on to this deposited oil and grease and cause a fire.
Installation Tip
The kitchen chimney needs to be at the right height above your gas burner for it to be fully effective and safe. The optimum distance between the chimney and the gas stove is between 26 inches i.e. 2 feet 2 inches and 30 inches, i.e. 2 feet 6 inches. The reason is that if it is closer than 26 inches then there is a danger of the kitchen chimney catching fire, and beyond 30 inches the suction power of the chimney gets negatively impacted.
Cleaning the filters
Your one option is to get an annual maintenance contract (AMC) with a good service provider, who will send in professionals to clean the filters and the different parts of the chimney on a regular basis. However it is also very easily possible to do the maintenance and cleaning yourself.
Chimneys with baffle filters
Cleaning chimneys with baffle filters is comparatively easier as you just need to remove the detachable baffle filter and then clean it with warm soapy water, using a mild detergent. Just clean and lightly rub to remove all the grease, oil and dirt. Make sure that you do not damage the filter by scrubbing with a hard scrub. Once cleaned and dried just put it back in place and you are good to go for a few months. This cleaning is only required once two months.
Please note that new chimneys are coming with stainless steel baffle filters, which have aluminium baffles encased by stainless steel, and these are relatively easier to clean. The older version chimneys have aluminum baffle filters and these get difficult to clean if there is a longer break between cleanings. The aluminium becomes difficult to clean as the oil and grease gets stuck to it. Thus if your kitchen chimney does not have the stainless steel cased aluminium baffle filters then you may want to get professional help in cleaning the filter.
Chimneys with mesh filters
If your chimney has a mesh filter, then cleaning it becomes a little difficult as it has a very fine mesh where the oil and grease and soot gets deposited and becomes difficult to remove.
To clean your mesh filter you need a few easily available home ingredients – baking soda, detergent, vinegar and water.
Take a plastic tub and fill it with boiling water of one fourth of a bucket. Then add four teaspoons of baking soda, then four tea spoons of a detergent, and a similar quantity of vinegar (around one fourth of a cup). The vinegar will make the mixture bubble and swirl. Now immerse the mesh filters in this water and leave them for about twenty minutes.
This cleaning liquid mixture will have removed a lot of the dirt inside the mesh of the filters, but after twenty minutes you can take an old toothbrush and clean the mesh. This will remove all the dirt and make the mesh filters absolutely clean.
This method can be used to clean stubborn dirt, grease and oil on baffle filters too. However you need to be careful about not damaging the aluminium baffles by scrubbing them.
Cleaning the hood
The hood of the kitchen chimney needs to be cleaned regularly or else oil and grease will get accumulated on it.
The cleaning of the hood is relatively simple. You just need to take clean wet cloth and wipe it clean of all deposits whether oil, grease or soot. Try not to use any strong cleaning agents as it may damage the surface of the hood. If the stains do not get removed by doing this you should call a professional to help with it. The hood should be wiped clean once a week.
Ductless kitchen chimney versus ducted kitchen chimney
As the names suggest, the main difference between the ductless and ducted, is the ducts that take the smoke and fumes out of the kitchen.
In a ducted kitchen chimney, the chimney sucks in the air and then throws it out of the kitchen through the ducts or pipes. This means that fresh air comes into the kitchen. In the ducted kitchen chimney, the air is cleaned and circulated right back into the kitchen. This does not make the ductless kitchen chimneys bad, but it does decrease their effectiveness.
Let us look at a comparison chart of ducted and ductless kitchen chimneys.
Comparison Factors | Ducted Kitchen Chimney | Ductless Kitchen Chimney |
---|---|---|
Price | Since you have to lay ducts, the cost is comparatively higher | Ductless kitchen chimneys do not need ducts, so cost less in comparison |
Filters | Ducted chimneys use a carbon filter to absorb the odours along with the grease, oil and soot | Ductless chimneys use baffle filters or mesh filters |
Performance | Ducted chimneys have been proved to be 30% more effective as they remove the air from the kitchen and do not recirculate it | Ductless kitchen chimneys recirculate the same air that they suck in, so the effectiveness is lower than the ducted type. |
Maintenance | Ducted kitchen chimneys are easier to maintain as they do not have carbon filters | Since ductless kitchen chimneys have carbon filters, they need to replaced regularly |
Suction Power | Ducted kitchen chimneys have higher suction power than the ductless ones | Ductless kitchen chimneys have comparatively lower suction power |
Efficiency | Overall ducted kitchen chimneys are more efficient | Compared to ducted chimneys, the ductless ones are lower in terms of efficiency |
Portability | Once fixed with the ducts (pipes) then it is difficult to change its position | Comparatively ductless kitchen chimneys are easier to move around and reposition |
